Starting January 23, Chișinău International Airport officially joins the ranks of airports equipped with the ILS CAT III instrumental landing system. This advanced technology enables flights to operate in extremely low visibility conditions, completely transforming the travel experience and significantly reducing delays and cancellations caused by unfavorable weather.
The ILS CAT III system provides pilots with precise information about direction and altitude during landing, even when dense fog reduces visibility to nearly zero. It allows landings with vertical visibility below 30 meters and horizontal visibility under 300 meters, down to a minimum of 75 meters. The benefits of this system are clear: fewer flight deviations, fewer landings at alternate airports, and, most importantly, safer and more predictable travel for passengers.
The ILS CAT III certification is a major step forward for Chișinău International Airport and its passengers. Now, even in the most challenging weather conditions, travelers can arrive on time and without discomfort. "This achievement reaffirms Chișinău International Airport's commitment to ensuring a superior level of safety and comfort for passengers while enhancing operational capabilities in all weather conditions," said Sergiu Spoială, Interim Administrator of the airport.
The project was made possible thanks to the collaboration between the Civil Aviation Authority, Chișinău International Airport, and MOLDATSA. It included a complete upgrade of the ILS/DME PDA08 modules, modernization of taxiway lighting systems, and additional training for airport staff.
