In terms of population, Malaga is the sixth city in Spain, the second in Andalusia and the forty-sixth in the European Union. It is the most densely populated agglomeration, formed by many settlements located along the 160 km of the Costa del Sol, and the center of the metropolitan area, covering 12 other municipalities. Malaga is estimated to be the fifth metropolitan area in Spain with over 1 million inhabitants.
Malaga is located on the extreme western coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, about 100 km east of the Strait of Gibraltar.
