Dusseldorf is located on the banks of the Rhine, just North of Cologne.

Düsseldorf is the capital of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the original capital of this entire region, known as the Ruhr region.

The latter, by the way, is considered one of the largest agglomerations in Europe with a total population of more than 10 million people.

Düsseldorf arose from a village around the 12th century and has grown steadily since then. In the 19th century, when the entire region became the industrial center of Germany, its heyday began, which, however, was cut short by the Second World War. Due to the abundance of heavy industrial enterprises, the city was subjected to massive bombing by Allied aircraft. It must be admitted that much of the architectural heritage either could not be preserved or was reconstructed from the rubble.

With the beginning of peaceful life, the city was seriously rebuilt, and with the transition to a post-industrial society, it lost its original industrial significance, but acquired the significance of a kind of capital of fashion and, in general, modern art in modern Germany.

What to see and do in Dusseldorf

There are several art museums in the city. Among the architectural monuments, the city has quite a lot of very old Catholic churches in the Gothic spirit. Perhaps one of the most notable is the Basilica of St. Lambert, located almost on the banks of the Rhine in the old part of the city, the so-called Altstatt. Its remarkableness, in addition to its seven-century history, lies in the somewhat folded roof. According to local legend, this happened due to the fault of the devil, who did not agree with the builder of the church about the price of his soul. However, the real reason is more prosaic: wood. what held the roof dried out, this created such a characteristic picture.

The central street of the city is the so-called Königs Allee, which has become a shopping center. An old fortress moat runs along the central part of the street, which gives it the appearance of a park rather than a busy street.

In terms of transport, Dusseldorf has an international airport. Within the city, the main means of transportation are the tram and metro. On the local equivalent of an electric train, the so-called S-Bahn, you can easily reach neighboring cities, such as Koel, Münster, Duisburg, Essen and so on.
