The name of the airport was changed in May 2004, before that it was called Otopeni International Airport.
The airport can be reached from Bucharest both with the Bucharest Transport Company buses, lines 783 and 780 (line 783 runs non-stop), which offers suburban transportation, and by train.
The railway line between Gara de Nord and Otopeni Airport was opened on December 13, 2020. Trains run every 40 minutes and travel time is approx. 20 minutes.
There is a project that aims to connect the airport to the Bucharest metro system by building a new line connecting May 1 metro station to the two airports. This project is underway, with an estimated completion date of 2022.
